We’re hoping that the exhibition match between Marseille and Toulon, done for charity and showcased one half of soccer and another half played by Rugby Union rule, known as ‘Le Choc’, is the beginning of a wonderful tradition, and hopefully it will involve Eric Cantona as a part-time referee the next time this happens.
Eric Cantona presided over the football part of the charity encounter, but decided to take part in the Rugby Union half as well, demonstrating his kicking skills in a close-range, without any difficult angle, Rugby Union Style penalty.
Cantona gave it a subtle chip, and hit the lower crossbar to the joy of fans at the Stade Felix Mayol in Toulon. In terms of result and scoring, Marseille won the soccer half 5-4, while the Rugby part of the encounter (refereed by former France head coach Marc Lievremont ended in a 31-31 draw, which gave Marseille the overall 36-35 win.
