Transfer Rumors 2013 – Manchester United Trying to Sign Mirko Vucinic

Reports in Italy suggest that Juventus are willing to sell Mirko Vucinic after adding two strikers to their roster this summer, and Manchester United might be the team to pick him up, allegedly already making an offer.

According to the Corriere Dello Sport, United have made an offer of €13 million for the Montenegrin striker, who has allegedly asked for a move after the arrivals of Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez. However, the striker situation at United isn’t a lot more promising for the player, unless some changes are going to be made.

Since arriving at Juventus from Roma in 2011 for €15 million, Vucinic has had his ups and down in terms of scoring, being played in numerous positions on the pitch – from left winger to supporting striker (where he’s usually best at) and the target man himself. In 63 league matches for the club, he has scored 19 goals, although his performances last season dropped in quality compared to his debut season.

For United, there are still Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez to consider. Despite rumors, at the moment Rooney isn’t going anywhere, while Chicharito, who has been mentioned as a candidate for Juventus numerous times in the past, is staying as well. Vucinic’s versatility means he can be deployed in more than one manner, but it’s hard to see the grand plan of United if they are indeed trying to sign him.

As for Juventus, with Alessandro Matri, Sebastian Giovinco, Llorente, Tevez and Fabio Quagliarella on the roster, it’s hard to see how everyone remains happy next season. Juventus usually play with two forwards – one striker and another that plays a bit off of him, usually in a wider position. Vucinic excelled in that role, serving as a higher-up-the-pitch playmaker, but spent too many matches as the striker last season as Juventus had trouble finding the right combination for their striker duo.

David Moyes loves using strikers out-of-position, which might mean Vucinic has more of a place in United that it seems at first.
