While their manager has spoken more than once about not wanting to add anymore players except for one specific name, Chelsea have launched a bid to try and sign 18-year old Brazilian centre back Dória from Botafogo.
According to Lancenet, Matheus Dória Macedo is the subject of a €9.6 million offer from Chelsea, despite Mourinho claiming he is happy with his squad, and won’t try to sign anyone except for Jose Mourinho. It probably means that his intention of not selling anyone might not be the most truthful in the world.
Doria began playing for Botafogo last season, featuring 20 times for the club, but he has received most of his attention after impressing those scouting the U-20 tournament in Toulon this summer, taking place during the U-21 European championship. He wasn’t included in the U-20 squad to the World Cup Brazil sent.
Dória actually appeared once with the national team in April, showing just how much he’s being regarded as one of their most important players of the future. He has been compared to Thiago Silva in the short time he’s been in the media spotlight, and a potential arrival to Chelsea will mean joining quite a big number of Brazilians – David Luiz, Oscar, Ramires, Lucas Piazon and Wallace.
After the tournament in France Barcelona showed some interest in the player, but like every other season, it doesn’t look like they’re making any move in the centre back position that’s not promoting from within. Chelsea have David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry, but except for Luiz, the competition for the second spot should be considered wide open, making Doria likely to become a starter in the Premier League despite still being a teenager.
