Maybe he’ll return to Ron Artest once he retires from the NBA, but it’s certain, at least according to Metta World Peace at the moment, that his current name won’t follow once he gives up on professional basketball.

According to ClevverNews, World Peace is going to change his name once again in the future, but not during his time with the New York Knicks, which just might be his final contract in the NBA. The reason the name change, legally, will have to wait until the end of his career is because legally it’s too much trouble.

He officially changed his name from Ronald William Artest Jr. on September 16, 2011, stating that an attempt to be an inspiration and bringing young people together around the world. His first name, Metta,  is a traditional Buddhist word that means loving kindness and friendliness towards all.

World Peace began his NBA career in 1999 after the Chicago Bulls took him with their 16th overall pick in the NBA draft. He played for the Bulls, Pacers, Kings and Rockets before landing with the Lakers in 2010, winning an NBA title. In the last few seasons his ability to contribute on offense in a way that’s not hitting open threes has been rather limited, while his perimeter defense is no longer among the NBA’s elite.

He averaged 12.4 points per game last season for the Lakers, hitting 34.2% of his three point shots. He was amnestied by the Los Angeles Lakers in order to save them some money on the luxury tax, although that didn’t help them get enough cap space to sign significant players heading into a very troubled next season. World Peace in the meantime joined the veteran group in New York, his hometown, in hoping to be a part of a team that does better the conference semifinal for the first time in well over a decade.
