While overall, Sebastian Telfair can be considered somewhat of a draft bust, he still has a place in the league after nine seasons, and he’s getting interest from two teams that might finally give him a chance to play in the playoffs: The Miami Heat and the New York Knicks.
An interesting issue with the Heat – they want to add another player to the mix, preferably a point guard, hopefully a veteran. Despite any deal coming being a minimum deal as they fill their roster to 15 players, the tax issue is something they’re very watchful of, and after adding Greg Oden, the Heat will owe $18.84 million towards the luxury tax next season. Eventually, they might decide not to fill the roster and save a few millions.
The New York Knicks have shown interest over the last week, be it by contact or via the press, in about every viable free agents left in the market. They simply want to fill in spaces, both with frontcourt and backcourt players, as injuries and age hurt them a lot during last season, and their limited cap space doesn’t allow them to do anything but keep on adding players through minimum deals.
Telfair, 28, was the 13th overall pick in the 2004 draft, coming straight out of high school. He is a Brooklyn native, and has played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors, averaging 7.4 points and 3.5 assists in his career.
Last season he was traded from the Suns to Toronto, averging only 14.2 minutes a night for the Raptors. He hasn’t played more than 19 minutes (on average) a night since the 2008-2009 season, and it’s obvious that whatever team he chooses to sign with, it won’t be anything more than being a borderline second unit player at best. However, that’s exactly where his skill set puts him when compared to the rest of the league, and picking up such a player to be your 14th or 15th player isn’t such a bad idea.
