When Manchester United snapped up Angelo Henriquez last season for £4.8 million it seemed like the Chilean wonderkid was going to become more than just a poster child for wasted talent. After on year of adapting, he’s hoping to show a new manager he deserves more chances than the ones he got last season.
Henriquez scored his first goal for the senior club in a friendly match against AIK, salvaging a draw as United get very close to their first official match of the season against Wigan. The same Wigan team Henriquez was loaned out to last season for the final four months of the season, hardly getting a chance to play.
He had four appearances for Wigan, all of them off the bench, scoring one goal. If United intended for him to win some playing experience in the Premier League, they made the right choice, and maybe sending him down to the Championship would have been wiser. He did get some playing time in the FA Cup, even playing the full 90 minutes twice, but failed to make a memorable appearance.
And it’s not that for their U-21 he did much better, scoring only one goal in five matches for the team. Not the best of debut seasons in a new league, although it was quite expected of him not be a significant part of United’s plans early on after signing there.
Now, no loans are being mentioned, and there’s a good chance Henriquez, who scored twice for the U-20 national side in the World Cup in Turkey, helping the team to the quarterfinals, will finally get to play his first official match for the team sometime this season. Moyes is keen on using youngsters, and at the moment, with United not really adding anyone new to their forward line, the versatile Henriquez, who can also play in a wider position than just a striker, will benefit from the situation.
His first goal for the club? Nothing special, not from Henriquez at least. Most of the work was done by a Michael Carrick through ball, beating the offside trap by the Swedes, finding Wilfried Zaha on the edge of the box, who delivered the accurate cross to be tapped in by Henriquez. Preseason goals aren’t usually celebrated, but it was understandable in this case.
