Liverpool FC Transfer Rumors – Guilherme Siqueira Very Close to Signing

Guilherme Siqueira

It looks like Liverpool have been through a dozen candidates for the left back position this summer, but they have finally found their man with Guilherme Siqueira, the Brazilian from Granada.

After making attempts to sign Aly Cissokho from Valencia and Lorenzo Melgarejo of Benfica, the Liverpool Echo are reporting that Siqueira, 27, might finally be the man Rodgers gets in order to improve the depth at the club behind Jose Enrique, who is pretty much the only senior left back the side currently have.

Last season, it caused some problem when Enrique was injured, forcing Glen Johnson, and not for the first time, to play as a left back. Sometimes it was Daniel Agger who was shifted from the middle.

Siqueira, who has been playing in Europe since he was 18, playing for Inter and Lazio at youth level, played sparingly for Udinese from 2006 to 2011. After a successful loan season in the Spanish second division with Granada, helping the club win promotion to the La Liga, he was signed on a free transfer by the club.

He has since played 70 La Liga matches for Granada, helping them remain in the top division against most predictions, including a 15th place finish last season. Siqueira is a solid defender, but is known for the technical abilities and attacking tendencies, scoring 12 goals over the last couple of seasons, the most famous of them a cheeky panenka penalty in a loss to Barcelona.

Liverpool could use some attacking ability from the wing, as Enrique might be considered an excellent defensive full back, but he is very inconsistent in his delievery and ability to contribute when it comes to attacking. Siqueira will be the underdog in the fight for the lineup spot, but he seems to be a player who fits the Rodgers mold a lot more than Enrique. If he’s signed for around £5-6 million, it won’t be a huge surprise if he eventually finds himself in the lineup.
