There wasn’t a whole lot of Colin Kaepernick time on the field for the San Francisco 49ers in their second preseason game, but it was obvious from his time and others’ as well that their current situation at Wide Receiver is something to be concerned about.
Kaepernick played for only one series before being taken off, as the 49ers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 15-13. Four plays, three points, two pass attempts, one completion and zero basis for meaningful analysis. Disappointing to some, he didn’t even get out of the pocket in an attempt to show his running ability. The 49ers played it safe, while bringing it to Alex Smith, who had a very bad time with 7-of-16 for 62 yards.
Smith was sacked three times, and Chiefs’ quarterbacks hit the ground 7 times. The 49ers defense and their running ability has been their stronger side for the last couple of seasons, and Frank Gore with one big 52-yard run, and the defense with a total of 7 sacks and 8 quarterback hits, showed that it’s probably not going to change this season.
The ball in the air? The 49ers finished with 13-of-25 for 111 yards, one touchdown and one interception. For now, the A.J. Jenkins experiment, hoping to see him become good enough like a first round draft pick should be, especially with the 49ers being quite thin at wide receiver, isn’t going so well.
Jenkins struggled against Sean Smith and the Chiefs’ defense, finding it very hard to beat the very big and physical cornerback. His only reception of the game in the third quarter against the Chiefs’ backups was taken away from him for a holding penalty on a different part of the field.
Most of the attention in this game was about the way Smith will function against his former team, but he ended up disappointing, like he did so many times for the 49ers when facing a defensive line that had no problem getting to him. For the 49ers, looking for any hint at having wide receivers good enough to make up for Michael Crabtree being out for a very long time, it’s going to take a longer time in order to come up with a positive conclusion.
