Even if Liverpool aren’t done in the transfer market yet, not all the signings they’ll make will be the kind to make an immediate impact, as their current target is 18-year old Will Hughes from Derby County, who’ll probably be loaned back to The Rams after the completion of the deal.
According to the Independent, Liverpool are willing to pay £10 million for the midfielder, who usually plays on the right side, pulling to the middle with his left foot. He’s already made three appearances for the U-21 English side, although he hasn’t taken part in any major competition with a national team.
He has already played 41 league matches for Derby, and he will only turn 19 by the end of this season. His real rise to prominence in the club was last season, becoming a constant fixture in the starting lineup, scoring two goals and adding two assists.
Hughes is someone who seems to be of the Jordan Henderson mold – a tall, athletic midfielder who can play in a number of positions across the pitch, but needs to find himself in a bit more central role in order to become a lot more effective offensively, so far usually contributing in the ball movement, defending and his never ending work rate.
Liverpool have made four signings this summer so far in Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure (coming in for free), but they’ve also added Aly Cissokho from Valencia on a loan deal, and are still on the lookout for more players to add before the summer transfer window ends. While Rodgers is mostly looking at young players who might not be able to make an impact right away, a lineup-caliber player is still in the cards for Liverpool, who seem to be needing some help at defense and specifically at centre back.
