It ain’t over till it’s… well, you know the rest. Chelsea might be announcing to the rest of the world that they’re only interested in adding a striker by the end of the transfer window, but it seems they’re also quite enchanted with ruining it for their rivals, as they attempt to make some sort of late move for Willian of Anzhi Makhachkala.
Until 24 hours ago, it seemed certain that the Brazilian will be making his way to Tottenham, but Chelsea have suddenly entered the fray after it was announced that Spurs have completed their medicals with the players and are now negotiating a five-year deal with him.
There’s a good chance that all the recent news of Chelsea diving in to try and sign him is only a ploy by Willian’s agent, the always shady Kia Joorabchian, to get some more money out of Tottenham for his player, but maybe there’s an actual interest from Chelsea regarding Willian.
Sky Sports are reporting the late Chelsea interest, which brings the Juan Mata subject into light one more time. He didn’t play on the opening match and wasn’t very successful in the minutes he played against Aston Villa. Manchester United are reported to be interested, and if that’s truly the case, maybe there is some truth to the whole interest from Chelsea regarding Willian.
The Brazilian has spent only half a season at Anzhi since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk, not doing anything too remarkable with the team that seems to be cutting its losses and getting rid of every expensive asset at its disposal. Tottenham and Chelsea were after Willian seven months ago as well, but failed to land him. This time, it’s seems quite certain he’ll end up with one of the London clubs, but if Champions League football is the most important thing to him, Chelsea might hold the edge, if they’re willing to pay the price Anzhi are after (£30 million).
