The summer transfer window is done, as Tottenham come up as the biggest spenders in the Premier League with Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela being their biggest signings, but most of the news on the final day was made by Manchester United, signing Marouane Fellaini from Everton and Arsenal, with the addition of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
Manchester City, as always, spent big, with Fernandinho being the second most expensive player in the transfer window, while Chelsea spent most of their money on two players: Willian and Andre Schurrle. Liverpool were busy with signings that were mostly kept under £10 million, except for centre back Mamadou Sakho from PSG, arriving for £18 million.
Manchester United – £30 Million
The champions did promise a little bit more activity than they actually had going on, completing only two signings during the transfer window: One small one of Guillermo Varela from Penarol in Uruguay for £1.5 million, and the other being of Marouane Fellaini of Everton, for whom they paid a bit too much at £28.5 million, adding to the criticism directed at David Moyes and Ed Woodward.
Manchester City – £102 Million
Very busy, as usual. City dug a little deeper into the transfer market than last season, probably coming up with a little higher quality for their new manager. They signed five players altogether: Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk for £35 million, Jesus Navas from Sevilla for £17 million, striker Alvaro Negredo, also from Sevilla, for £22 million and Montenegro’s star Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina for £22.8 million. On the last couple of days they also completed the signings of Martin Demichelis from Atletico Madrid for £4.4 million.
Chelsea FC – £68.5 Million
Some probably expected that Jose Mourinho would demand more money to be spent on his arrival, but they did miss out on a couple of players they were really interested in, while actually making two signings of at least £19 million. One of them was Andre Schurrle from Leverkusen who they’ve been after for a very long time, and the other was Willian, signed for £33 million from Anzhi. Samuel Eto’o, coming on a free transfer, also came from the Russian club. Marco van Ginkel, coming for £8.2 million from Vitesse was the most expensive of the “future” signings, joined by Cristian Cuevas from O’Higgins, Stipe Perica of Zadar and Christian Atsu from Porto, although he was loaned out to Vitesse right after signing. Mark Schwarzer was signed on a free transfer.
Arsenal FC – £44.8 Million
The Gunners waited and waited for their big chance. While teasing everyone with two miniscule signings of Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flaimini on free transfers, Mesut Ozil of Real Madrid turned out to be the most expensive Premier League signing of the summer, coming for £44 million, a new club record. Emiliano Viviano of Palermo arrived on a loan as well.
Tottenham Hotspur – £107 Million
The biggest spenders of the summer, thanks to the rather late sale of Gareth Bale for over £80 million. They’ve added 7 new players to the team: Paulinho from Corinthians for £17.2 million, Nacer Chadli from Twente for £7.1 million, Roberto Soldado of Valencia for £26.1 million, Etienne Capoue from Toulouse for £9.6 million, Erik Lamela of Roma for £26.4 million, Vlad Chichires of Steaua for £8.3 million and Christian Eriksen of Ajax for the rather low fee considering his potential of £11.8 million.
Everton FC – £23.1 Million
Another team that waited quite a while to make their big signing of James McCarthey of Wigan, coming in for £13.4 million. They’ve sent more money Wigan’s way by adding Arouna Kone for £6.1 million and Antolin Alcaraz on a free transfer. Joel Robles also arrived, coming from Atletico Madrid for £3.5 million. Wigan have also added a few players on loan: Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona and Gareth Barry from Manchester City.
Liverpool FC – £51.2 Million
A busy summer for Liverpool, with holding on to Luis Suarez probably their biggest achievement. They’ve also made quite a few additions to the team, starting with Kolo Toure coming from Manchester City for free, and followed by Luis Alberto of Sevilla for £7 million, Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo for £7.2 million, Simon Mignolet from Sunderland for £9.3 million, Mamadou Sakho from PSG for £18 million and Tiago Ilori from Sporting CP for £7 million. They’ve also added Aly Cissokho and Victor Moses on loan deals.
West Brom – £14.3 Million
Didn’t splash the cash, obviously, but made some significant additions. Stéphane Sessègnon of Sunderland and Victor Anichebe of Everton both came for the price of £6.1 million each. Nicolas Anelka and Diego Lugano arrived on free transfers, while Matej Vydra, Scott Sinclair and Morgan Amalfitano arrived on loans.
Swansea City – £20.4 Million
Very busy, although with small or cheap signings. José Alberto Cañas of Betis, Jernade Meade of Arsenal and Alexandros Gogic of Olympiacos arrived on a free transfer; Jordi Amat of Espanyol came for £2.5 million; Alejandro Pozuelo of Betis came for £400,000; Jonjo Shelvey of Liverpool arrived for £5.1 million and Wilfred Bony of Vitesse was signed for £12.2 million. Also, Alvaro Vasquez of Getafe arrived on loan, and Gregor Zabret was signed from Domzale for an undisclosed fee.
West Ham – £20.5 Million
Spent most of their money on the flop that keeps on bouncing from club to club, Andy Carroll, costing them £15 million. Liverpool enjoyed more Hammers money for Stewart Downing, coming for £5.1 million. Adrian of Betis, Razvan Rat of Shakhtar and Daniel Whitehead of Stockport came on free transfers.
Norwich City – £26.5 Million
A very busy summer for the Canaries, adding no less than 9 players. One of them, Johan Elmander, came on loan. The rest? Ricky van Wolfswinkel from Sporting for £8.8 million; Javier Garrido from Lazio for £1.3 million; Martin Olsson of Blackburn for £2.5 million; Carlo Nash from Stoke for free; Nathan Redmond from Birmingham for £2 million; Leroy Fer of Twente for £4.8 million; Gary Hooper of Celtic for £5.5 million; Semi Ajayi of Charlton for free.
Fulham – £12.5 Million
Maarten Stekelenburg came from Roma for £4.9 million; Scott Parker came from Spurs for £3.9 million; Sascha Riether came from FC Koln for £1.2 million; Elsad Zverotic came from Young Boys for £350,000. Derek Boateng (Dnipro) and Fernando Amorebieta from Bilbao arrived on free transfers; Adel Taarbat and Darrent Bent came on loan deals.
Stoke City – £5.6 Million
Very humble in their dealings. Erik Pieters from PSV for £3.1 million and Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen for £2.4 million were the only cash deals. Juan Agudelo arrived from the MLS for free, just like Marc Muniesa from Barcelona. Stephen Ireland and Oussama Assaidi came on a loan deal.
Southampton – £34.8 Million
Three deals, but all of them quite significant: Dejan Lovren of Lyon for £8.8 million, Victor Wanyama from Celtic for an exaggerated £12.7 million and Pablo Osvaldo from AS Roma for £13.3 million.
Aston Villa – £17 Million
Kept Christian Benteke, which was their biggest achievement, but also added Jores Okore from Nordsjaelland for £4.1 million, Libor Kozak from Lazio for £6.1 million, Aleksandar Tonev from Lech Poznan for £2.8 million, Antonio Luna from Sevilla for £1.7 million, Nicklas Helenius from Aalborg for £1.3 million, Leandro Bacuna from Groningen for £880,000 and Jed Steer from Norwich on a free transfer.
Newcastle
Despite their relegation battles from last season, the only addition Newcastle made was adding Loic Remy from QPR on a loan deal, which make Joe Kinnear and Mike Ashley look even more ridiculous than before, which is quite difficult.
Sunderland – £21 Million
Almost a completely new team: Modibo Diakité of Lazio for free, Cabral of Basel for free, Duncan Watmore of Altrincham for free, Valentin Roberge of Maritimo for free, David Moberg Karlsson from IFK for £1.5 million, Vito Mannone from Arsenal for £2.1 million, Jozy Altidore from AZ for £8.8 million, El-Hadji Ba from Le Havre for free, Emanuele Giaccherini from Juventus for £6.6 million, Charalampos Mavrias from Panathinaikos for £2.6 million and Andrea Dossena from Napoli for free. Ondrej Celustka, Sung-Yong Ki and Fabio Borini also arrived on loan deals.
Cardiff – £33.5 Million
Newcomers with money didn’t really save for a rainy day, signing Andreas Cornelius of Copenhagen for £7.6 million, John Brayford from Derby for £1.5 million, Simon Moore from Brentford for £150,000, Steven Caluker from Spurs for £8 million, Gary Medel from Sevilla for £11 million, Kévin Théophile-Catherine from Rennes for £2.2 million, Peter Odemwingie from West Brom for £2.5 million and Maximiliano Amondarain from Nacional on a free transfer.
Hull City – £13 Million
Plenty of new additions, most of them for very cheap. The most expensive signing was Tom Huddlestone from Tottenham, coming for £5.1 million. Curtis Davies of Birmingham arrived for £2.3 million, Ahmed Elmohamady came from Sunderland for £2 million, Yannick Sagbo from Evian for £1.5 million, Allan McGregor from Besiktas for £1.5 million, George Boyd from Peterborough for free, Steve Harper from Newcastle for free and Maynor Figueroa from Wigan for free, while Danny Graham, Jake Livermore and Gedo came on loan deals.
Crystal Palace – £15 Million
Similar to Hull – plenty of deals, most of them very cheap. Dwight Gayle of Peterborough was their biggest signing, coming for £4.6 million. Adrian Mariappa from Reading came for £3 million, Jack Hunt from Huddersfield came for £2 million, Bary Bannan of Aston Villa came for £1.8 million, Jose Campana from Sevilla came for £1.7 million, Marouane Chamakh arrived from Arsenal for £1 million and Stephen Dobbie came from Brighton for £800,000. Kevin Phillips, Elliot Grandin, Florian Marange and Neil Alexander arrived on a free transfer, while Jason Puncheon came from Southampton on a loan deal.
