With the economic situation in Spain worsening, the only two clubs not showing it in the La Liga are Barcelona and Real Madrid, with the signings of Neymar and of course Gareth Bale, the most expensive player this summer and in history if you disregard inflation.
Atletico Madrid and Sevilla managed to make some noise thanks to the major money they got through their sales, but quite a few clubs spent less than €1 million this summer, showing how big the problem really is for those not getting the fair share of the TV revenue.
FC Barcelona –Â ÂŁ70 Million
Everyone wanted to see a centre back coming in, but as usual, Barcelona went in a different direction, making only two additions. One of them is Neymar, coming in for €57 million from Santos, and the other being Bojan Krkic, who Barcelona bought back from Roma for €13 million and loaned on to Ajax.
Real Madrid – €143 Million
As always, the biggest spenders in Spain, with Gareth Bale’s €91 million arrival beating the transfer ability and spending of any other club in the league. They also spent €30 million on Isco (from Malaga) and Asier Illarramendi (from Real Sociedad), €6.5 million on Dani Carvajal from Leverkusen and €6 million on Casemiro from Sao Paulo.
Atletico Madrid – €33 Million
Despite selling Falcao for €60 million, they didn’t go overboard on their spending. The most expensive arrival was Joshua Guilavogui from Saint-Etienne, coming for €10 million, followed by Leo Baptisto from Rayo for €7 million, Toby Alderweireld from Ajax for €7 million, Roberto Gimenez from Benfica for €6 million, David Villa from Barcelona for €5.1 million, Jose Jimenez from Danubio for €1 million while Daniel Aranzubia arrived from Deportivo on a free transfer.
Real Sociedad – €3 Million
Hardly spent at all, paying the €3 million on Haris Seferovic from Fiorentina, while adding Mikel Abaroa and Oscar Vegas on a free transfer, while Esteban Granero arrived on a loan deal.
Valencia – €15 Million
No money in the bank, but still adding players after selling Roberto Soldado and others. Dorlan Pabon was signed from Monterrey for €8 million, followed by Helder Postiga from Zaragoza for €3 million and Michel from Levante for €500,000, while Oriol Romeu arrived on loan from Chelsea.
Malaga – €3.7 Million
No money in the bank, despite the sales of Isco, Joaquin and Toulalan. Their biggest signing was Vintorino Antunes from Pacos for €1.5 million, while the rest of their arrivals: Fernando Tissone, Roque Santa Cruz, Flávio Ferreira, Bobley Anderson, Marcos Angeleri, Samu and Roberto Chen were all either for free or for less than €1 million.
Betis – €4.8 Million
Xavi Torres arriving from Getafe for €3 million was the only major signing Betis made. They added Chuli & Lorenzo Reyes for a combined €1.8 million, while the arrivals of Markus Steinhöfer, Cedrick, Stephan Andersen, Joan Verdú, Jordi Figueras, Juanfran and Vincenzo Rennella were for free. Guillermo Sara and Didac Vila came on loan deals.
Rayo Vallecano
Didn’t spend any money, with all their additions coming on a free transfer: RaĂşl Baena, Nery Castillo, RubĂ©n, Leonel Galeano, JoaquĂn Larrivey, Alberto Bueno, ZĂ© Castro and Sebastian Fernandez. They’ve also added quite a few players on loan: Johan Mojica, Saul Niguez, Christian Cueva, Iago FalquĂ©Â and Jonathan Viera.
Sevilla – €34 Million
Despite their financial problems, managed to sell players for €90 million, allowing them to make moves in the transfer market. Kevin Gameiro of PSG was their biggest addition for €7.5 million, followed by Carlos Bacca from Club Brugge for €7 million, Vicente Iborra from Levante for €6 million, Vitolo from Las Palmas for €3.2 million, Raul Rusescu from Steaua for €2.5 million, Jairo from Racing for €2.5 million, Sebastian Cristoforo for €2.25 million, Beto from Braga for €2 million and Diogo Figueiras from Pacos for €880,000. Nicolás Pareja, Marko Marin, Daniel Carriço, Stéphane Mbia and Denis Cheryshev came on loan deals.
Getafe – €6.5 Million
Not too busy, with Pedro Leon coming from Real Madrid for €6 million being their biggest deal. Sergio Escudero from Schalke cost €0.5 million, while the rest were free transfers (Roberto Lago and Alexis) and loan deals (Lisandro Lopez).
Levante
The only player they actually paid for was Aloys Nong, coming for €300,000. The rest were free transfer deals: Sérgio da Silva Pinto, David Barral, Jordi Xumetra, Issam El Adoua, Andreas Ivanschitz, Javi Jiménez and Remi Gomis.
Athletic Bilbao – €15.3 Million
Maybe because of the new stadium, Athletic decided to spend some money on the limited talent pool available to them, adding Benat Etxebarria from Betis for €8 million, followed by Kike Sola from Osasuna for €4 million and Mikel Rico from Granada for €2.8 million. Mikel Balenziaga arrived from Valladolid for €0.5 million, and Xabier Etxieta came from Elche on a free transfer.
Real Valladolid
Only one player arrived for actual money: Zakarya Bergdich from Lens for €750,000. Alcatraz (Caldas), Diego Mariño (Villarreal), Omar (Huesca), Heinz Barmettler (Vaduz) and Humberto Osorio (San Martin) arrived on free transfers. Fausto Rossi came from Juventus on a loan deal.
Granada – €6.3 Million
Yacin Brahimi from Rennes was purchased for €4 million, and Douglas Santos was signed for €2.3 million from Nautico. The rest: Gai Assulin, Manuel Iturra, Piti, Riki, Essaid Belkalem and Mavroudis Bougaidis came on a free transfer, while Alexandre Coeff, Orestis Karnezis, Odion Ighalo, Dimitri Foulquier and Reico arrived on loan deals.
Osasuna – €3.1 Million
Added five players this summer – Miguel de las Cuevas from Gijon for €1.2 million, Francisco Silva from CDUC for €1.2 million, Oriol Riera from Alcorcon for €700,000 and Jordan Loties and Joan Oriol on free transfers.
Celta Vigo – €4.6 Million
Their biggest signing was Nolito from Benfica, arriving for €2.5 million, joined by Andreu Fontas from Barcelona B for €1 million and Charles from Almeria for the same fee. Rafinha from Barcelona and Jon Aurtenetxe from Bilbao came on loan deals.
Elche
The only player they paid money for was David Lomban of Barcelona B, coming for €50,000. The rest? Cristian Sapunaru from Zaragoza, Tono from Granada, Domingo Cisma from Atletico Madrid, Sergio Leon and Carlos Sanchez all came for free. Miroslav Stevanovic, Carles Gil, Manu de Moral, Ruben Perez, Alberto Botia, Javi Marquez and Richmond Boakye all arrived on loan deals.
Espanyol
Still settling for minimal signings, spending a combined €750,000 on Alex from Real Madrid Castilla and David Lopez from Huesca. Manuel Lanzarote, Abraham González and Juan Rafael Fuentes arrived on free transfers; Pizzi, Sidnei, Gabriel Torje and Jhon Cordoba arrived on loan deals.
Villarreal – €16 Million
Splashed some cash upon their return to the La Liga, with Gio Dos Santos coming from Mallorca for €6 million being their biggest signing, followed by Tomas Pina from Mallorca for €5 million, Gabriel Paulista from Vitoria coming for €3.5 million, Jeremy Perbet from Mons signings for €1.4 million and Aleksandar Pantic from Red Star signing for €300,000. Bojan Jokic came from Chievo on a free transfer, just like Jonathan Pereira from Betis. Sergio Asenjo from Atletico Madrid came on a loan deal.
Almeria
Newcomer, but no spending. Sebastián Dubarbier, Óscar DĂaz, Marcos TĂ©bar and Óscar Ustari came for free; Rodri, Suso, NĂ©lson and Marco Torsiglieri came on loan deals.
