A debut in a European competition shouldn’t go this smoothly, but Swansea have taken huge strides forwards in recent years, so a 3-0 in the Mestalla against Valencia is just another step in their journey, capped off by a beautiful free kick scored by Jonathan de Guzman, which just might be the best set piece goal we’ll see this season.
In their Europa League opener, Swansea benefited from a red card to Adil Rami after only 10 minutes, as the Frenchman pulled Wilfried Bony from behind, denying a clear route to the goal. From that moment, Valencia were out of the match, and Bony’s goal four minutes later signaled the end of the home side’s chances to get anything out of this match.
Michu, finally finding his scoring touch earlier this week against Liverpool, scored the second goal to make sure the Welsh side playing in a Spanish style would go home with the three points, while De Guzman scored a stunning free kick that Vicente Guaita wasn’t even close to stopping, that had both swerve and power, and surely will be on any end-of-season ranking for goal of the season.
