Just when Marco van Ginkel was beginning to find himself a place in the Chelsea lineup, earning himself a second consecutive start for the team, comes an injury that might end his season if it turns out his knee twist is more than just something he needs to shake off.

Van Ginkel played for only 10 minutes in the Chelsea lineup in their League cup match against Swindon, before taking a bad step, losing his footing with his left leg and collapsing to the ground while twisting his knee.

The 20 year old Dutch midfielder arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer from Vitesse, but it wasn’t likely he’d be getting too much playing time very soon, even if Chelsea are quite short when it comes to central and defensive midfielders. Van Ginkel made his lineup debut in the Champions League loss against Basel, and was hoping to redeem some of the lost confidence in him vs Swindon.

For now, Chelsea are waiting for the results of his scan, hoping that isn’t a torn ligament but only something that needs a bit of rest to heal from. A torn ACL or MCL will mean at least 6 months away from the football pitch, and sometimes it might be even more severe.
