Rene Steer of St Neots Town With the Goal of the Year in the FA Cup

A match in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup between St Neots Town and Canvey Island isn’t usually something that interests even the most devoted football fans, but thanks to a unique goal by Rene Steer, playing for the losing side of the Saints in this case, a meaningless game on even a regional level has gained quite a lot of attention.

After a 2-2 draw in the first match, St Neots Town hosted Canvey Island at Rowley Park. The visitors, playing in the Isthmian League, which is filled with semi-professional and amateur clubs, won the match 2-1, thus advancing to the third and final round of qualifying, but the moment of the match came from Steer.

Steer was first to a ball bouncing off a failed corner kick, hitting it with venom from almost 40 meters out. A wicked left cracker, Steer’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced in, shocking the fans of the small ground, although it wasn’t more than a consolation goal for the Southern Football League team.
