Entering his 15th NBA season, there’s more than a slight chance it’ll also be the last one for Shawn Marion, who will become a free agent in June 2014, and isn’t planning on talking or thinking about what he does once he becomes a free agent. Retirement, despite being good enough and healthy enough to stay on for a few more years, won’t be too much of a surprise.

Marion, 35, is making $9.3 million this season for the Mavs, hoping that his final year with the team will go better than last one, in which the team missed the playoffs for the first time in over a decade, missing Dirk Nowitzki for the first half of the season. Marion averaged 12.1 points and 7.8 rebound per game, which clearly means he has plenty left in the tank, even if it means taking a slightly less meaningful role down the road.

No team will pay Mario that kind of money on his next NBA contract, but half of it will probably be enough to get him to agree for a year or two, unless he becomes one of those players that decided to join a cap-strapped team that has a chance to win the NBA title. However, Mario isn’t thinking that far ahead, and according to what he said to the Dallas Morning News, this season just might be his last.

No way will there be a 16th season. I want to be able to walk when I’m done. I’m looking forward to a great year. I think there’s going to be some great things happen for us this year. And I don’t look beyond that.

Mario has been with the Mavs since 2009, playing for them these last four seasons. He played a major role in their title winning campaign of 2010-2011, doing an excellent defensive job on LeBron James during the NBA finals.
