Real Madrid – Cristiano Ronaldo Luckily Keeps Title Hopes Alive

Once again, a bit too much of injury time saves Real Madrid from being knocked out of the La Liga title race. This time, Cristiano Ronaldo needed a lucky bounce and Alvaro Morata to give his team any kind of hope with the first goal of the season for him in a dramatic and undeserved 3-2 win over Levante.

It comes down to talent and a little bit of luck. Levante took the lead, but Real Madrid needed only four minutes to get back in the match with a goal from Sergio Ramos. Not too much happened in their favor from that moment until the incredibly dramatic ending. It began with Nabil El Zhar coming off the bench, ignoring his wide open teammates and scoring and 86th minute goal that meant Real Madrid are out of the title race, and have another season of focusing only on one competition.

A few minutes later, and the feeling were completely different. The expected blitz was fruitful – first with Angel di Maria doing some fantastic work in the middle, setting up Alvaro Morata to score the equalizer in the 90th minute. Four minutes were added, and Real Madrid made the most of it. Cristiano Ronaldo took a shot from 14 meters out, which bounced off a Levante player, going in the net.

All of Real Madrid’s problems, but they have a few things on their side – a referee that kept Levante with one man down for far too long and added too much time, but also the talent of Cristiano Ronaldo, who keeps scoring huge goals, with a little bit of help, even when his team is playing awfully. No defense, and a very bland midfield, and yet the wins keep coming, and the hope of catching up with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, currently five points apart, remains alive.

Carlo Ancelotti, every way you look at it, is doing a terrible job. Too many changes in his lineup and insisting on wrong players in wrong positions. But sometimes you need more luck than anything else. Lucky enough to have Cristiano Ronaldo be a huge winner, and lucky enough that Alvaro Morata isn’t too frustrated by being left on the bench for the incompetent player Karim Benzema has become.
