Chicago Bears – Give Martellus Bennett the Ball

Chicago Bears – Give Martellus Bennett the Ball

A game time decision going into the Thursday night game between the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, tight end Martellus Bennett is going up against one of the worst defenses in the NFL, and if he’s healthy enough to play, should pull off what might be his best game of the season.

The Giants have allowed more red-zone receptions (17) and touchdowns (eight) than any team but the Cowboys. They rank 26th in total defense, giving up 395.2 yards per game, while allowing 36.4 points a contest, the worst in the NFL.

Bennett is enjoying his first season with the Chicago Bears, finally having a tight end for Jay Cutler to throw to. There are other problems with this offense, but Bennett is doing quite fine, catching 25 passes for 281 yards and 3 touchdowns, ranking 7th among tight ends in total yards and 31st among all receivers in receptions. When it comes to making the most of his presence in the endzone, Bennett is ranked sixth in the NFL among all receivers in opportunity-adjusted touchdowns, and shouldn’t have too many problems against the terrible Giants.

Bennett also was involved in probably the biggest moment of the season for the Bears, catching a last second touchdown from Jay Cutler to beat the Minnesota Vikings 31-30 in week 2. Bennett has taken some pressure off of Brandon Marshall, although it doesn’t seem the wide receiver is really happy about being less involved in Marc Trestman’s offense.

Bennett being hurt in his knee and eventually not playing might help Marshall, and Alsho Jeffery, get a few more catches and yards to pad their stats, as the Bears are pretty empty when it comes to receiving tight ends behind Bennett on the depth chart, although it might not be so good for the team.
