There hasn’t been too much of playing time for Nick Foles this season, but the longer Michael Vick sits out with his injury and the better Foles fills his role for the Philadelphia Eagles, a passing of the torch between the quarterbacks is more and more likely.

Vick isn’t going to be healthy enough to play against the Dallas Cowboys, a team they played against last season to give Foles his first chance in the NFL. However, even when he comes back, there’s more than a good chance that he has already lost his starting place for Foles, who has started only once this season and playing more than a half against the New York Giants.

There are plenty of reasons to believe Foles, even if he isn’t the kind of runner Michael Vick is which cancels out the Eagles’ chances to be effective in read-option situations, is simply better for Chip Kelly’s system due to his accuracy, screen-pass ability and possibly not making it so hard for the offensive line to know where the quarterback is going.

Foles is 12-of-15 on third downs this season, getting eight first downs. Among quarterbacks with at least 15 attempts on 3rd down, Foles is first in completion percentage (at 80%) and second in first-down percentage (53%). Vick, in the same situation, is completing only 41% of his passes and getting the first down 28% of the time.

Thee’s also Foles on fourth quarters – completing 64% of his passes, 14.1 yards per attempts, 4 touchdown passes to 0 interceptions with a 99.5 QBR. Vick is completing 53% of his passes  with 7.2 yards per attempts, not throwing a single touchdown pass with a 76.7 QBR. Among quarterbacks with at least 14 fourth-quarter attempts, Foles is first in yards per attempt, QBR and touchdown percentage.

There are pluses to Vick in terms of of his running ability and experience; the sample size for Foles isn’t big enough to determine that he is better for the Eagles. However, the more he plays, it’s clear that Vick isn’t the quarterback the Eagles need right now and in the future.
