The big game of the week kept Arsenal at the top of the table with a five point lead after beating Liverpool 2-0, while Chelsea lost some ground with a 2-0 loss at Newcastle. Manchester City got a huge win (7-0) over Norwich, putting them back on track in the title race, and Manchester United won two matches in a row (3-1 at Fulham), also making sounds of title challengers again.
In the lower part of the league, Crystal Palace continue to sink, and Sunderland aren’t doing much better, getting two players sent off and remaining with only 4 points after 10 matches.
Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0: Jose Mourinho didn’t have anything to complain about after his team missed too many chances during a dominant first half, allowing Newcastle to encroach forward later on and find openings for their biggest win of the season, getting goals from Yoan Gouffran and a late finisher from Loic Remy to thrust themselves up the table into the upper half.
Fulham 1 Manchester United 3: A match that was over in the blink of an eye, as a stunning 13 minute blitz brought the champions goals from Antonio Valencia, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, making it a very comfortable afternoon for them at Craven Cottage. Fulham got one goal back through Alex Kacaniklic, but that couldn’t change the miserable mood for his team at the moment.
West Ham 0 Aston Villa 0: A terrible match at Upton Park, keeping both team at the bottom half of the table, one point from one another.
West Brom 2 Crystal Palace 0: The problems for the newly promoted side continue, sunk deep deep in last place without much hope of improving as they didn’t score a goal yet again. Saido Berahino and Gareth McAuley scored for the home side, who are picking up important points against the teams they can beat.
Stoke 1 Southampton 1: An amazing opening minute, with Asmir Begovic scoring a goal after only 18 seconds from his own penalty box, was the highlight of the match. The rest was a physical battle in the middle of the pitch without too many chances, except for Jay Rodriguez scoring an equalizer before the end of the half.
Manchester City 7 Norwich 0: A humiliating defeat for the Canaries who can’t lift themselves up from the relegation zone. For the home side it was an opportunity to improve their goal difference: After Bradley Johnson scored an own goal to open the scoring, David Silva, Matija Nastasic, Alvaro Negredo, Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko completed the demolition job.
Hull City 1 Sunderland 0: Two red cards, foolish ones, to Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena came after Carlos Cuellar scored an own goal 25 minutes into the match, putting Hull once again in the top half of the table.
Arsenal 2 Liverpool 0: A huge win for the Gunners in one of their first big tests of the season, proving they’re at least a league above Liverpool, who aren’t good enough, especially in their midfield, to cope with this kind of quality. Santi Cazorla with a beautiful goal opened things in the first half, and although Liverpool looked a bit more attacking in the next 45 minutes, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge weren’t accurate enough. Aaron Ramsey scored a beautiful second half goal.
Everton 0 Tottenham 0: The most mention worthy moment in the match was Romelu Lukaku hitting Hugo Lloris with a knee to the head, and after the French goalkeeper got treatment for a few minutes he actually carried on playing despite the probable concussion he was suffering from, while Lukaku left the pitch.
Cardiff 1 Swansea 0: The first ever Welsh derby of the Premier League went to Cardiff, winning through a goal by Steven Caulker. Swansea’s goalkeeper Michael Vorm was sent off in extra time, which meant a Swansea player had to go in goal for the final few minutes. Rangel actually made a save before it was over.
