While the biggest match of the weekend hasn’t happened yet, two results meant quite a lot in what’s shaping up to be the title race: Liverpool had an easy 4-0 win over the falling apart Fulham thanks to a brace from Luis Suarez, and Chelsea dropped two points by drawing at home against West Brom thanks to Ramires diving and winning a made up penalty kick in injury time.
Southampton continue to be the most surprising team of the season with a 4-1 win over Hull City, keeping them in the top 3, at least until Manchester City and Tottenham play their matches.
Southampton 4 Hull City 1: The fantastic start the Saints are having isn’t stopping, especially not against one of the worst away teams in the league. Morgan Schneiderlin, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Steven Davis scored for the third-placed team, while Yannick Sagbo scored the only goal for the visitors.
Liverpool 4 Fulham 0: A return to the 4-4-2 didn’t really matter against a very weak Fulham side, that once again conceded three times before the end of the first half. It began with an own goal from Fernando Amorebieta, followed by a quick second from Martin Skrtel and Luis Suarez capping off the first half. The Uruguayan added a fourth early in the second half, with Steven Gerrard picking up two assists.
Chelsea 2 West Brom 2: A terrible performance from Chelsea, but they’re lucky to be on chummy terms with referees. Samuel Eto’o scored the opening goal for Chelsea, but Shane Long and Stephane Sessegnon took advantage of some poor defending from John Terry and the Chelsea defense. A Ramires dive earned Chelsea their injury time salvation from the penalty spot; Eden Hazard converting the equalizing opportunity.
Aston Villa 2 Cardiff 0: After four Premier League matches without a goal, Aston Villa finally found three points and the net with a dominant second half against Cardiff. Leonardo Bacuna with a beautiful free kick and a follow up goal from Libor Kozak put the team, for now, in the upper half of the table.
Crystal Palace 0 Everton 0: An awful match, but at least Crystal Palace didn’t lose for the first time in eight matches, while Everton continue to lose a bit of ground compared with the top teams.
Norwich 3 West Ham 1: A big win for Norwich, taking them away from the relegation zone at least for one week, while West Ham find themselves in quite a bit of trouble. Ravel Morrison scored first for the Hammers, but a fantastic second half for Norwich won them the match, getting goals from Gary Hooper, Robert Snodgrass and a 90th minute goal from Leroy Fer.
Tottenham 0 Newcastle 1: Loic Remy keeps on his scoring ways (7th goal this season) while Tottenham continue to sink due to their inability to finish. Tim Krul put on quite a show with quite a few saves in must score opportunities.
Sunderland 1 Manchester City 0: Manchester City continue with their awful away form as Sunderland get closer and closer to an escape from the relegation zone. An early goal by Phillip Bardsley meant more pressure from City for the entire match, but they remain far away from the top of the Premier League.
Swansea 3 Stoke 3: A dramatic turn of events that prevents both teams from escaping the bottom. Jonathan Walters and Stephen Ireland scored for the visitors in the first half, but Swansea turned things around with goals from Wilfried Bony (twice) and Nathan Dyer, but a Charlie Adam penalty in the 90th minute saved Stoke a point.
Manchester United 1 Arsenal 0: Not an impressive performance from Manchester United on the attack, but a Robin van Persie goal early on and an excellent defensive display gave David Moyes his first ever win over Arsene Wenger, keeping Arsenal scoreless for the first time this season.
