Andre-Pierre Gignac – The Perfect Volley & Goal of the Season

Andre-Pierre Gignac

It’s taken Andre-Pierre Gignac quite some time before he’s managed to find his scoring rhythm with Marseille, but it looks like these last couple of seasons have been good to him. The start to this year is no different, scoring 6 goals so far, including what might be the best we’ve seen this season in the 3-1 win over Ajaccio.

In the away win for Marseille, bringing them up to 4th and closer to Monaco and Lille (hard to see them catching up with PSG), Gignac scored Marseille’s second goal, giving them the lead for the second and final time of the match six minutes before the half-time whistle.

He took control of the ball on the edge of the box, and made the weird decision of moving backwards and sideways out of the box, a movement that doesn’t create too much balance for most players. It didn’t matter to Gignac, who still wasn’t turned towards goal, and rocketed a 18-yard volley into Guillermo Ochoa’s net.

Dimitri Payet opened the scoring for Marseille, before Grenddy Perozo equalized only four minutes later. Gignace sent Marseille with the lead into the half time break, and Florian Thauvin added a third goal 13 minutes into the second half, completing the impressive away win.

Gignac, who has been with Marseille since 2010, scored only nine goals through his first two seasons at the club. Last year he had 13 goals in 28 matches, and he’s off to scoring six goals in the first 12 of this year. Not exactly Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but a lot closer to what you expect from a top striker.
