Meeting for the second time this season, it’s incredible to think that the New York Giants, after everything that’s happened, might actually be the favorites in their game against the Dallas Cowboys considering the form both teams are in, although there should be one huge asterisks over what the G-men have done over the last month.
They don’t like being reminded of it, but their wins have come against backup quarterbacks. Matt Barkley from Philly, Scott Tolzien of Green Bay, Josh Freeman on his debut for the Minnesota Vikings. However, momentum is one huge factor in the NFL, and after a confidence disaster during their 0-6 start, things look a bit more normal right now for a team that’s very close to making the playoffs in the unstable NFC East.
The Dallas Cowboys? They did lost 49-17 to the New Orleans Saints, but they’re coming off a bye week, and it’s still hard to understand how they’re not leading, comfortably, in the division. They’ve lost three times by three points or less. They’ve blown leads and have made terrible mistakes in the closing minutes of games. At some point, luck has to start going in their direction, unless it’s not luck that’s stalling them at 5-5.
One key to this game will be Eli Manning staying away from interceptions. He has been picked off 17 times this season, and the Giants lead the NFL with 29 turnovers this season. Dallas have their problems on defense, especially when it comes to stopping big plays and the run, but are fourth in the NFL with 22 takeaways this season, while committing an NFL-low 11 turnovers. Their issues aren’t from their mistakes, but the timing in which they come in.
There will be plenty of motivation on the Cowboys’ side to end their rough season on the road (1-4) and especially for Dez Bryant, who hasn’t scored a touchdown in two consecutive games and four out of the last five, hoping to have a better game than the one he opened the season with (4 receptions, 22 yards) against the Giants.
Prediction – Momentum is on New York’s side, but it doesn’t change the fact that they have a bad offensive line and a mistake prone quarterback. If the Cowboys keep it together and Jason Garrett doesn’t enter those stretches of terrible playcalling along with his coordiantors, Tony Romo should be sufficient for getting back on the winning way.
