Chelsea FC Transfer Rumors – Fabio Coentrao Closer to a Loan Deal

Fabio Coentrao

There isn’t much of a future for Fabio Coentrao at Real Madrid, which means the window of opportunity for Chelsea to try and sign the player on any kind of deal is right now, with the Premier League club hoping to secure a loan deal as soon as possible due to their problems at the left back position.

Ashley Cole is struggling with a rib injury and declining form. Ryan Bertrand, year after year, is showing that he isn’t up for the challenge of being Cole’s heir for Chelsea. Cesar Azpilicueta has been Mourinho’s latest invention of the wheel which isn’t working out too well, being a right back who doesn’t have anything to offer from the left side.

So Mourinho, who has already shown interest in his former player at Real Madrid during the summer, might complete a move, according to the Daily Mail, that will bring Coentrao over to Chelsea in January, with the option of making it a more permanent move at the end of the season. Coentrao has played in only four league matches this season for Real Madrid, clearly a second-choice to Marcelo.

What does this mean for Cole? He’s already been pushed out of the lineup in the England squad, which means that his chances of making the 2014 World Cup are getting smaller, even if he is completely fit by the time Hodgson makes up his mind. Baines is clearly the better choice at the moment, and more players might move ahead of him if Coentrao arrives at Chelsea and takes over his spot as well.

Cole’s contract runs out at the end of the season, and rumors circulating around the player always suggest he’ll be looking for a massive deal once his Chelsea contract runs out, probably with either Monaco or PSG, possibly the only teams willing to pay that much money for one of the best left backs in the world over the last seven-eight years, but no longer part of football’s elite.
