Club Leon & San Lorenzo Champions of Mexico & Argentina

Leon vs America

A night of finals, decisions and titles behind handed out in Latin America, with San Lorenzo triumphing in the insanely tight race of the Argentine Toreno Inicial, getting a draw that was enough for them to win the title while Newell’s Old Boys were held 2-2 in Rosario. In Mexico, it’s a bit simpler, with a two leg final, won by Club Leon, beating Club America 3-1 in the second leg and 5-1 on aggregate.

For San Lorenzo, it is their 15th championship and first since the 2007 Clausura tournament. They finished the season with two 0-0 draws that made things a bit tenser and more complicated, having the chance to seal the title two weeks ago if they would have won against Estudiantes. Newell’s picked up only five points from their final eight matches, finishing two points behind the Saints and Velez, who were the better side in the 0-0 draw with San Lorenzo, finished 2 points behind as well in one of the less predictable finishes in recent history.

The system works a bit differently in Mexico – a league with a three stage knockout tournament at the end of it. Club America finished first in the league and got past Tigres and Toluca on its way to the final. Leon, third in the Torneo Apertura, got past Morelia and Santos Laguna. They had no problem playing the second leg at the Estadio Azteca, winning 3-1 with goals from Maruo Boselli, Juan Ignacio Gonzalez and Edwin Hernandez, claiming the club’s sixth first division title and their first since the 1991-1992 season.
