NBA Rumors – Philadelphia 76ers Trading Thaddeus Young

Thaddeus Young

For a few weeks, it looked like the Philadelphia 76ers weren’t taking, but an awful series of losses made everyone realize that this team isn’t going anywhere but the lottery this season. Thaddeus Young isn’t planning on being part of a losing effort, and is asking to be traded.

According to Jake Fischer/Liberty Ballers, Young was quite excited about the prospect of playing for the Houston Rockets if the Omer Asik deal would have gone through, but right now it’s off the table. So Young is trying for the Sixers to make a push for a trade on their own initiative, sending him to somewhere he has a better chance of winning some games in the near future.

Young, 25, is averaging 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds this season, enjoying the high-pace style the Sixers are implementing. The problem are the losses – After winning the first three games which made everyone think that this team might have what it takes to stun the East, things become as predicted: They’ve lost 19 of the last 23 games, including the last 7. No one is talking about making the playoffs anymore.

Young might not be that easy to move. He’s listed for a $8.8 million cap hit this season, but makes $9.4 million next season and $9.9 million in 2015-2016, which means any team that takes him is in for a long term obligation, and not a cheap one. The Rockets seemed like a good place, needing a power forward who can play well on both ends of the floor, which Young is known of doing, but he’s not the only reason the deal fell through.

The Sixers won’t be too distressed about trading him. Young is a good player, but not someone the franchise can’t see itself going on without. If it gets them more cap relief and a young player/draft pick they feel strongly about, they won’t hesitate pulling the trigger on dealing him away.
