Match Highlights – Raja Casablanca vs Bayern Munich

Thiago Alcantara

It’s not quite clear who seriously Bayern Munich took their venture to the Club World Cup, but they came through thanks to early goals from Dante and Thiago Alcantara, beating Raja Casablanca 2-0 in the final, claiming their fifth trophy of 2013, almost making it a perfect year.

The only title missing from their cabinet is the German Supercup (losing to Dortmund), but no one has really put too much thought to it, like this title in a tournament held in Morocco, beating the surprising local champions from Casablanca. Bayern Munich take the title for the third time (and for a first under its current format), and it doesn’t matter they didn’t look very impressive along the way.

When Dante scored the opening goal, bringing the finishing touch off a corner, it felt like that sixth minute goal will be enough to claim the title. Thiago Alcantara, only now finding a more meaningful spot in Pep Guardiola’s plans after an injury kept him away from getting playing time, scored the second goal and put the game in a very long garbage time period.

Casablanca were the better team in the second half, but couldn’t create real dangerous chances. Manuel Neuer was prepared for pretty much everything thrown at him, which wasn’t much. Bayern took their leg off the gas, just like in their loss to Manchester City in the Champions League, just didn’t face a strong enough opponent to take advantage of that.

In truth, despite the happiness on the field and while waiting for the trophy to be lifted, the happiest news the team got all day was the losses of Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.

The questions now? How great is this team on historic levels, and if Bayern Munich are really good enough to finally become the first team to repeat as Champions League winners?
