College Football Rumors – Texas Trying to Sign Jim Mora From UCLA

The Mack Brown is officially over (with a bowl game loss to Oregon), which means Texas have all their focus directed at one thing: finding a new head coach. On the top of their list at the moment is Jim L. Mora, coming off his second season with UCLA.

Texas have been having conversations with UCLA about possibly releasing their head coach, but there are other candidates no one in Texas is willing to talk about, both coming from the NFL and College Football.

More has been in Westwood for the last couple of years, leading UCLA to a 18-8 record, leading his team to a 42-12 win over Virginia Tech this week in the Sun Bowl, finishing the season at 10-3. Mora took over for the very disappointing Rick Neuheisel in 2012, winning the South division with UCLA in 2012 (losing in the conference championship game to Stanford) and probably bringing the Bruins to a ranked finish this year.

Mora signed a five-year, $12 million deal at UCLA when he was brought over in 2011. He previously coached in the NFL, posting a 26-22 record in three season with the Atlanta Falcons and then only 5-11 in one season with the Seattle Seahawks.

Whoever comes in for Mack Brown in Texas, it’ll be quite a change. Brown, who coached his final game in the Alamo Bowl loss to Oregon previously this week spent 16 seasons as the head coach of the Longhorns. He posted a 158-48 record while in Austin, leading the team to nine consecutive seasons of 10 wins or more from 2001 to 2009. He won the BCS national championship game after the 2005 season and led the team to the final once again four years later, losing to Alabama.

His last few years were disappointing as pressure on the school to fire him and for him to resign grew with each season. He had his first losing season with the school in 2010, and hasn’t been able to win more than nine games in the following three seasons, finishing in the top 25 only once (last year after a 9-4 season).
