Alabama Crimson Tide – Lane Kiffin Getting Another Shot

It hasn’t been a very successful ride for Lane Kiffin as a head coach in pretty much anywhere he’s been, but it hasn’t stopped from the Alabama football program to give him the offensive coordinator job, something he hasn’t done in almost a decade.

Kiffin, fired from USC earlier this season after just over three years as the head coach of the program, agreed to a three-year deal that will make him the OC and QB coach at Tuscaloosa.

Kiffin posted a 3-2 record this season with USC (0-2 in the Pac-12) before getting the ax, fired after a 21 point loss to Arizona State. He finished with a 28-15 record with the Trojans, where he also worked as a Tight Ends, Wide Receiver and eventually an offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2006. During his first two years as head coach of USC the team was ineligible to win conference titles and play in bowl games. He had scholarship restrictions hurt him in the following seasons.

Kiffin worked as a head coach previously for Tennessee, having a 7-6 season before bolting for the USC job, and was previously employed in the NFL by the Oakland Raiders. He lasted a bit more than a season, but was fired after five wins in 20 games for the struggling franchise.

Kiffin has been linked to an Alabama job for the last month, ever since Nick Saban invited him to evaluate the Tide’s offense after the regular season and leading up to the Sugar Bowl. While at USC in 2011, Kiffin’s offense produced a 3,500-yard passer, a pair of 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard rusher. Kiffin replaces Doug Nussmeier, who after two years as the Tide’s offensive coordinator took the same position under Brady Hoke in Michigan.

Kiffin makes a pretty high-profile coordinator pair working under Saban, joining DC Kirby Smart, who has helped build one of the best defenses in the country over the last few years. Kiffin will now try and make the quarterback change transition run smoothly after A.J. McCarron left for the NFL. Kiffin’s USC averaged 49.1 points and 579.8 total yards per game when he was the offensive coordinator.
