It’s hard to find another NFL franchise in more of a mess than the Cleveland Browns. Not just the eternal rebuilding process and not making the postseason for over a decade, but firing Rob Chudzinski after only one season has made them something of a social pariah, with coaches and coordinators not really excited about getting the offer to be their head coach next season.
Where to begin? Jimmy Haslam is in legal trouble: In 2013, the IRS and the FBI disclosed that they were investigating Haslam, and his Pilot Flying J corporation, for attempting to defraud consumers of millions of dollars in gas and other types of rebates.
The quarterback situation is a mess. Brandon Weeden isn’t the quarterback of the future, so the Browns are going to have to pick another one in the first round. The running back issue is a mess, which it has been for quite some time. After trading away Trent Richardson, it continues to be the mess it has been for the last decade except for Peyton Hillis in 2009.
The defense was fine this season, but the Browns still let their coordinators Norv Turner and Ray Horton left without anyone putting up a fight. In short? All the talk about building a new team and looking forward to success has gone down the drain. The Browns offered the job to Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, someone who is looking for openings, but he declined the offer.
There has been talk about the Browns making an offer to former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, but it seems to be just rumors in the wind at the moment. According to most reporters it’s going to be very difficult for the Browns to find someone with credentials that actually wants to be their head coach, which means at least one more year of poor performances, and no escape from their “hell” of losing, being unable to win more than five games a season for the last six.
