The buyout Danny Granger has been hoping for with the Philadelphia 76ers has finally come, and this means the veteran small forward can choose a contender to play for in what remains of this season, with the Los Angeles Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs being the two favorites to sign him, although the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks are also hoping to get an offer heard.
And Granger has favorites of his own. According to the Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne, Granger has already met with Clippers representatives during their game with the Rockets, and prefers playing for them and not the San Antonio Spurs.
Granger sometimes practices with the Clippers in the summer time and probably has a bigger potential role to play if the Clippers sign him because of the injury concerns to J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford. However, more minutes might not necessarily mean better fit for Granger, who didn’t exactly light it up for the Pacers this season, averaging only 8.3 points in 22.5 minutes, shooting 35.9% from the field coming off the bench.
So why not the Spurs? The Spurs are just as interested and maybe a better fit for his talents, giving them a win man to come off the bench. But Granger is still hoping to get plenty of minutes, and as Kawhi Lenoard has just returned from his injury, Granger won’t be playing there as much as he might in Los Angeles.
Granger has said he’ll listen to all the offers on the table, which means he’ll be considering the Rockets and the Mavs to complete the trio of Texas offers to him. The Rockets keep adding forwards to their roster without a general plan, hoping at some point to get a bingo with a perimeter player so they can improve their inconsistent outside shooting. With Jordan Hamilton and Chandler Parsons, Granger won’t be getting big minutes there.
So how about the Mavs? It’s hard to think of Granger in the same lineup as ball-loving players like Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon playing next to him, but pretty much anything will be an improvement to what the Mavs have on the bench right now, trying to secure their place in the playoffs, hoping that it’ll be enough for more than just one round.
What about the Miami Heat? Udonis Haslem said that whatever happened in the past between the player and the team remains there, but the truth of the matter is that Caron Butler is much closer to become the team’s free agent signing before the playoffs, and Granger himself prefers other destinations.
