One leg seems to be enough for Real Madrid to make it past the quarterfinals after a convincing 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, while PSG earned a big advance towards the second leg with a 3-1 over Chelsea thanks to a dramatic 90th minute goal from Javier Pastore. Both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t finish their matches, leaving due to injuries.
Real Madrid were huge favorites going into their clash against Dortmund unlike last year. Too many injuries to the German side, not to mention missing their striker Robert Lewandowski, seemed to be too much for Dortmund to handle, without even addressing the Real Madrid talented front three.
Two of the trio created the opening goal after exactly 177 seconds, with a brilliant pass from Karim Benzema reaching Dani Caravajal, who didn’t do much to set up Gareth Bale, needing two quick touches to score the opening goal.
Dortmund did try and get back into the match, but it seemed like every mistake was punished with a deadly counter attack from Real Madrid, shooting a total of 20 times at Roman Weidenfeler’s goal. Isco made the most of one these counter attacks, scoring the second goal in the 27th minute, which he deserved, being maybe the best player on the pitch.
The trend continues in the second half with Real Madrid pressing, Dortmund trying from time to time but not really bothering Iker Casillas. Luka Modric found Cristiano Ronaldo just on the edge of the box and borderline offside to score the third goal before leaving the pitch with an injury, not getting to finish the match and celebrate scoring his 14th Champions League goal of the season.
In Paris, the opening goal came at the exact same moment, as an awful John Terry mistake (becoming a habit, isn’t it) allowed Ezequiel Lavezzi to score the opening goal for PSG. The problem was they felt too satisfied with that opener, allowing Chelsea to dominate for most of the remaining minutes in the first half, resulting in a penalty kick converted by Eden Hazard.
The second half was all PSG, and eventually they got the lead they deserved after another defensive mistake from Chelsea, this time David Luiz mishitting the clearance and scoring an own goal. Zlatan Ibrahimovic left the pitch after some sort of knock on his shin, but Lucas Moura was actually better than him in the minutes he played.
Javier Pastore came on late for Lavezzi and put all of his disappointing moments and overrated labels behind him with a brilliant dribble that Cesar Azpilicueta and Willian should have done more to stop, resulting in his injury time goal that gives PSG a two goal lead heading into the second leg.
