Dodgers Over Giants – Matt Cain Gets Destroyed

Matt Cain

The Los Angeles Dodgers avoid getting swept at home by the San Francisco Giants with a 6-2 win, highlighted by Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez hitting two home runs each, making it an awful day for Matt Cain at the mound.

Cain lasted six innings but allowed five hits and five runs including three homers, picking up his first loss of the season. On the other end, Zack Greinke won his second game of the season, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out eight batters before leaving the finishing job for the relief crew.

I made three really big mistakes to guys who can drive the ball well. That’s what ended up changing the game and that’s what ended up costing us. I don’t want to nibble and I don’t want to go away from the strike zone. I’m going to try to attack guys. Obviously, you want to keep the ball in the park, but I’ve always been a guy that can elevate the ball. But sometimes when it’s elevated to certain guys and you leave in certain areas, it’s prone to go out.

Matt Kemp hit his first home runs at Dodgers stadium since late 2012, and obviously his first of the season. He got his first in the 2nd inning, a solo homer that went for 419 feet, and got a big hit again in the fourth, also scoring Adrian Gonzalez on that one. It was Kemp 6th multi-home run game of his career and the first since September 2012.

Kemp finished with 2-for-3 at the plate, but wasn’t the only one bringing in runs. Hanley Ramirez got his first two home runs of the season as well – the first came in the 4th inning and the final one in the 8th. Both were solo home runs. Andre Ethier also got an RBI, his 7th of the season, with a sacrifice fly in the 6th inning that helped Ramirez score one of his three runs of the game.

Cain’s a tough pitcher and he throws a lot of different pitches. So I was just looking to get a ball over the plate, and he gave me a couple of them over the plate and I put some good swings on them and did what I needed to do. My second home run, that’s when I know I’m seeing the ball good. When I’m driving the ball to right field. It always feels good to hit home runs here in Dodger Stadium, especially with the home crowd. It has been a while, so I was pretty excited to do that. It can be tough to hit home runs here at times, but it looked like the ball was carrying a little bit tonight.

Yasiel Puig didn’t play because of his thumb, meaning it’s only his fifth career game out of the lineup – four of them have been because of injuries. In a game filled with home runs, the Giants got theirs in the 6th inning, narrowing the lead down to 4-2 with hits from Brandon Belt (his fourth of the season) and Hunter Pence with his first.

The Dodgers are up next, at home, against the Detroit Tigers for two games with Dan Haren opening the series on the mound. The Giants have three home games against the Diamondbacks, with Tim Hudson kicking off the series.
