The loss to Bayern Munich means more jokes about Manchester United and David Moyes in the form of internet memes are heading your way, mostly concentrating on the manager’s ability to turnaround the club’s fortunes over the course of a season, and the fact that there’s no Champions League football for the club for at least a year.
That might be the most interest part: Manchester United, part of UCL royalty and missing out on the competition only once since its inception, haven’t just been knocked out, but they have a tiny chance of actually making it through the league. This means no UCL football for them next season, and maybe no European football at all.
Looking back at the two legs against Bayern, Manchester United played reasonably well, and did better than expected. Not really great football, but simply solid defending and efficient counter attacking, to a point. They had the lead twice and lost it, and once they couldn’t find their footing and discipline again in the second leg, they had no chance competing with Bayern.
Probably the thing people made fun of the most during the night were those 68 seconds of elation Manchester United, David Moyes and the fans felt. A wonder goal from Patrice Evra and suddenly the thoughts of actually making the semifinal popped into everyone’s mind. Those dreams and aspirations were shattered less than two minutes later.
