A lot of good things are happening right now for the New York Yankees: The winning streak, CC Sabathia looking better, big hitting from Alfonso Soriano and Brian McCann. However, triple plays don’t come around too often, and the one that did stole the spotlight in the 10-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Home runs from Alfonso Soriano (his fourth of the season), McCann (third of the season) and Yangervis Solarte (his first) brought the offense, giving the Yankees a total of four runs off of them. We also saw the Yankees score on two triples: Brian Roberts helping Scott Sizemore score followed by Jacoby Ellsbury helping Roberts himself score. The Yankees had 16 hits in total as Ellsbury, McCann, Solarte and Roberts picking up two RBIs each.

David Price was pummeled in the five innings he lasted, giving up 10 hits and six runs, despite showing his usual impressive strikeout rate with six before getting taken off. Things didn’t go so well for the players who came on after him: Heat Bell giving up two runs and Grant Balfour yielding the same. Josh Lueke was the only one who didn’t allow any runs against him, giving up a hit in the 1.1 innings he played.

Sabathia picked up his second win of the season (2-2, 5.19 ERA) with his finest performance as well. He threw for seven innings, giving up two runs (including a homer to Sean Rodriguez) while walking only two and striking out six. Dellin Betances closed the final two innings, allowing a few walks and no hits, as the Rays finished with a poor 7-for-32 and an even worse 0-for-7 with runners in scoring positions.

The show stopper was the triple play in the second innings. Sabathia pitched to Sean Rodriguez, and Yangervis Solarte stepped on third before throwing it quickly to Brian Roberts at second. Roberts’ throw to Sizemore, playing at first base for the first time in his career, made a great scoop to catch Sizemore and get him out in time, making it the third triple play on a Sabathia pitch for the Yankees and the team’s first since April 12 last year.

The Yankees improve to 10-6 this season picking up the first game in the series over the Rays. They’ve won their last four games, including a double-header sweep against the Chicago Cubs and a very strong finish to their series against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees are the only team in the AL East with a record better than .500 despite injuries and changes to their lineup, which means that the disappointment of last season isn’t likely to repeat itself.
