Almost every game and series is going to be the last of something for Derek Jeter. This time? His last game against the Los Angeles Angels, resulting in a 9-2 win for the New York Yankees to claim the series, while Jeter himself ended a very long drought when it comes to hitting home runs.

How long? It was his first of the season which ended a 161 at-bats drought (something like half a season give or take) without blasting one into the crowd. Despite the excellent day for the Yankees at the plate, mostly materializing during the first and second innings, Jeter had the only home run of the day, a solo homer in the 2nd inning to put the Yankees up 6-0. The Yankees hit 12-of-36 on the day, making it yet another terrible start for Hector Santiago.

It was a very good day for Vidal Nuno on the mound for the Yankees, getting his first win of the season on his fourth start. He allowed only four hits and one run in 6.1 innings, striking out three batters. This was his first win since May 13 of last season, and has now two wins in seven career starts. Things were quite different from Santiago, who is now 0-6 on seven starts this season with a 5.19 ERA.

He didn’t make it out of the third inning, giving up five hits and six runs while walking three batters before calling it a day. The Yankees had a 5-0 lead by the end of the first inning as a Mark Teixeira double scored both Jeter and Ellsbury, followed by a Solarte sacrifice fly to score Carlos Beltran. An error by Santiago kept the scoring going, followed by a Roberts RBI single and then Jeter’s homer.

Later on in the game (8th) John Ryan Murphy with a 2-RBI single and a Carlos Beltran sac fly finished the job, while the Angels got their runs from C.J. Cron and Erick Aybar. Both Mike Trout and Albert Pujols finished the game without a hit, combining for 0-of-7 at the plate as the Angels dropped 2-of-3 in the series to once again fall below .500, while the Yankees improved to 18-15.

The game began with the Angels saying their goodbye to Jeter while there was a standing ovation from the rare sellout crowd at Angel Stadium. Jeter finished the game with 2-of-5 and one RBI as he improved his average to .262 this season and getting only his 7th RBI.
