As expected, the incredible finish to the game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Los Angeles Clippers results in plenty of memes. Some of them make fun of the incredibly dubious decisions by the referees, while others point to the choke job Chris Paul performed in the closing moments or Doc Rivers complaining about the officiating.
The bottom line? The Thudner won thanks to a combination of those things: Bad referees, bad decisions by Chris Paul and also by Doc Rivers who has had better games on the sidelines, especially by not being able to stop the slide as his team let go of a 13 point lead in the final four minutes.
Some might even compare this to the Lakers – Kings series from 2002, but that’s not the case. Yes, there were some bad calls in the end helping the Thunder take a 3-2 lead in the series. Yes, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are no longer separated from LeBron James, as the flop-haters are turning on them as well. But there were some mess ups by Paul himself, especially those two turnovers in the final seconds that ultimately cost his team the game.
Tony Romo, Cliff Paul – Chris Paul isn’t walking away cleanly from this train-wreck of an ending. People will remember his mistakes, not the referee decisions, when it’s all said and done if the Clippers don’t come out of this very difficult situation. The Thunder might have not deserved to be one win away from the conference finals, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are.
