2014 World Cup – Day 9 Results & Table

Bryan Ruiz Goal

While the most impressive result of the day came from Group E, where France beat Switzerland 5-2 to come very close to securing qualification into the next stage, the biggest impact was made by Costa Rica in Group D stunning Italy with a small 1-0 victory, making sure they’ll be in the round of 16. Ecuador kept their hope alive after beating Honduras 2-1.

Italy 0  Costa Rica 1: Another shocking result, or maybe we shouldn’t be that surprised? Costa Rica make it into the round of 16 for the second time in their World Cup history (previous one was in 1990) thanks to a second win over a former champion, this time coming against Italy as Bryan Ruiz scored just before the end of the first half. We would like to say Italy did everything it could to get back in the match, but they didn’t look like it. England suffered the most, as they’ve been knocked out of the tournament, not making the group stage for the first time since 1958.

Switzerland 2  France 5A huge match in Salvador, as France exploded against a slow defense that was completely overwhelmed by the speed, passing and movement of the French side. Olivier Giroud, starting this time, opened things and Blaise Matuidi followed a minute later. Karim Benzema missed a penalty, but a goal from Mathieu Valbuena before half time meant France had a three goal lead at half time. Benzema finally scored in the second half on the counter and Mousa Sissoko added a fifth before Blerim Dzemaili and Grant Xhaka made things look a bit more respectable on the scoresheet.

Honduras 1  Ecuador 2A much better match than anyone expected that eventually meant we say goodbye, as expected, to Honduras from this World Cup, while Ecuador winning means it’s wide open between them and Switzerland for the qualifying spot, although there is a slight chance France don’t make it as well. Carlo Costly scored to give Honduras the lead, but two goals from Enner Valencia gave Ecuador the victory.

No red cards, finally, while our goal situation continued to look very good. After 11 goals in three matches including a new high for this tournament with 7 in the match between Switzerland and France we’re at 77 goals through 26 matches, meaning we’re at 2.96 goals per match.
