A day that started badly but day 11 in the 2014 World Cup will be remembered for plenty of excellent football. Belgium beat Russia with a late goal to clinch a spot in the round of 16 while Algeria stunned everyone with four goals in a dominant win over South Korea to completely change Group H. The second batch of group stage matches was concluded with the dramatic 2-2 draw between the United States and Portugal, almost knocking Cristiano Ronaldo out of the World Cup.
Belgium 1 Russia 0: A very bad match between two teams that should have given us a lot more, but a few good minutes from Belgium in the end and a nice delivery of a counter attack from Eden Hazard resulted in an assist to the 19-year old Divock Origi to put Belgium in the next stage, while Russia find themselves in big trouble.
South Korea 2 Algeria 4: One of the more peasant surprises of this tournament. The South Korean defense completely collapsed, conceding three goals in the span of 11 minutes with Slimani, Halliche and Djabou scoring. South Korea got back in the match with a goal from the fantastic Heung-Min and plenty of chances, but Yacine Brahimi finished the job in the 62nd minute, as Ja-Cheol scoring didn’t mean anything.
United States 2 Portugal 2: Portugal are left needing a miracle to qualify after a draw with the United States. Portugal took the lead with an early goal from Nani after a silly mistake in the American defense, but the USA were the better and more dangerous team throughout the match, scoring twice in the second half thanks to Jermaine Jones with an amazing goal and Clint Dempsey with what seemed to be the winner until a 94th minute goal from Varela to save his side a small chance of staying alive.
With 11 goals in three matches we get a significant improvement to our average, as we improve to 2.94 goals per match with a total of 94 in 32 matches.
