Trades Leading to & During the 2014 NBA Draft

The big trades involving players took place a day before the draft, as the Houston Rockets sent Omer Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans for a future first round selection and a six player deal between the New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks was headlined by Tyson Chandler and Jose Calderon switching places.

But we also had draft day deals involving picks, like the Sixers and the Magic swapping between Dario Saric and Elfrid Payton or the Miami Heat taking Shabazz Napier just to make LeBron James happy, while the Hornets got P.J. Hairston and Semaj Christon out of it.

Rockets – Pelicans

Omer Asik

The New Orleans Pelicans need a center to help create a very formidable frontcourt with Anthony Davis, the Houston Rockets need cap space to add either LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony, not to mention Omer Asik not really wanting to play for them anymore. They’re going to have to find a backup center through free agency because they didn’t take one in the draft. The Pelicans gave them a first round pick (protected, 4th-to-19th) in the 2015 draft.

Mavs – Knicks

Tyson Chandler

The New York Knicks had to do something and shake up their roster while the Dallas Mavericks are both trying to make themselves look more attractive for Anthony or even James while building their chances of making a run for the title next season. Tyson Chandler goes to Dallas along with Raymond Felton, while the Mavs send Jose Calderon, Samuel Dalembert, Shane Larkin and Wayne Ellington to New York along with the 34th and 51st picks, used on Cleanthony Early and Thanasis Antetokounmpo, the younger brother of Giannis from the Bucks.

Nuggets – Magic

Arron Afflalo

So many trade rumors, eventually Arron Afflalo goes back to a team he has already player for as the Nuggets plan on making this season about more than just potential and Brian Shaw learning the ropes. In return, the Magic got young guard Evan Fournier and the 56th overall pick, used on Roy Devyn Marble coming out of Iowa.

76ers – Magic

Dario Saric

The Sixers seem to be in love with potential they can’t use right now. They used the 10th overall pick to take Elfrid Payton while the Orlando Magic took Dario Saric with the 12th. The two were traded along with the Sixers getting from the Magic a second round pick in the 2015 draft and a first round pick in the 2017 NBA draft.

Bulls – Nuggets

Doug McDermott

The Bulls were looking for a shooter and specifically at McDermott (or Stauskas), willing to give up their 16th and 19th overall picks for him. So the Nuggets took the former Bluejay at 11th and traded him to Chicago for Bosnian Jusuf Nurkic and Gary Harris out of Michigan State. The Bulls also got Anthony Randolph, while the Nuggets received a second round pick in 2015 as well.

Heat – Hornets

Shabazz Napier

The Miami Heat are doing everything in their power to keep LeBron James, which means drafting the player he wanted. Trading picks and players with the Charlotte Hornets, the Miami Heat got the 2014 MOP of the Final Four while the Hornets ended up with P.J. Hairston, Semaj Christon and a future second round pick.
