The Cleveland Cavaliers are turning into the Miami Heat 2.0 during the big three era, as LeBron James wants to feel comfortable on his new team, convincing former teammates to sign and play next to him, as James Jones joins the team to try and be of some service in their effort to win a championship.
Jones hasn’t played a lot of basketball over the last couple of years, regular season and playoffs. James has pushed for Jones to be featured more, but the 33 year old from Miami who has also played with the Heat since 2008 has a total of 58 regular season games in the last two seasons. Aside from outside shooting, there’s really nothing he adds to a team. Still, he shot 52% from beyond the arc last season.
So now Jones has joined as well, signing a veteran’s minimum. Mike Miller was signed on a two-year deal 24 hours earlier. James isn’t done trying to add role players and shooters he is fond of to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Ray Allen, still undecided on whether or not he wants to retire, is being aggressively pursued. The Cavs aren’t the only team going after him, with the Miami Heat hoping to retain him for another season, but it’s too difficult to predict where he’ll land at the moment.
The Cavs might be the team on the lips of everyone right now because of the LeBron James arrival, but there’s still work to be done. James, Irving, Wiggins, Tristan Thompson, Anderson Varejao and Dion Waiters. Does that sound like a championship core? Probably not, even in the Eastern conference with both the Heat and the Indiana Pacers getting significantly weaker this offseason.
This is isn’t Miami of Ohio, but it’s looking more and more like a different version of the Miami Heat. There’s potential to this Cavaliers team, obviously, and James will probably show just how much of a win swing his ability his worth like he did in the 2010-2011 NBA season, his first with the Heat. Still, the expectations might be a bit higher than they should for a team that needs more than just the best player in the league.
