Chicago Bulls – Aaron Brooks is the Backup Derrick Rose Needs

After making some big moves to change and improve their frontcourt, the Chicago Bulls had to address a vital situation, which is finding someone adequate to play as backup point guard for Derrick Rose. Aaron Brooks, who has been moving around quite a lot in recent years, seems to be a good choice to fill that position.

Brooks spent last season with both the Houston Rockets and the Denver Nuggets, averaging 9 points and 3.2 assists in 21.6 minutes a night. Like D.J. Augustin who suddenly became a much more meaningful part of their offense last year, Brooks has a chance to find himself playing more minutes than before, especially if the Bulls tread things very carefully with Rose.

Augustin played a lot of minutes last season because of Rose’s injury, while Kirk Hinric isn’t exactly someone who should be playing big minutes as a starting point guard. Brooks comes into a different situation, but it’s simply impossible to enter a season without thinking about what might happen with Rose. Maybe he’ll finally be healthy, but considering how many games he has played since April 2012, the safer and wiser course would be to expect the worst.

Brooks had one season of posting star numbers. In 2009-2010 with the Houston Rockets he averaged 19.6 points per game as he did quite well for himself. That kind of production never happened before or since, but even during his short stint with the Nuggets last season, he had games in which he showed that he has the ability to explode and go on unstoppable scoring sprees.

For a team that sometimes struggled finding players who can put the ball on the floor and create some points and chances for others, having another option off the bench of that liking is immensely important. The Bulls have really upgraded their situation and depth in the front court this offseason with Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic, but to be a championship team more depth is needed, and signing Brooks is a move in the right direction.

Championship team? We need to see more than what they have right now, but you never know how things come together over the course of a season. As we’ve mentioned all through this post: Even with a healthy Derrick Rose, the Bulls need more of something to be considered a true threat to the title, but they’re making the right moves to address weaknesses that overcame them during last season.
