A Super Bowl rematch in the preseason? Not very exciting. The Denver Broncos beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16 with both Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson on the field, but the game will be mostly remembered for the lightning delay, the too many flags being thrown and the endzone interception by Steven Johnson that finished the game.
One of the most interesting things to see was how Russell Wilson struggled against the Broncos pass rush, something the team worked on improving after their humiliating Super Bowl experience in which they weren’t able to get any pressure on Wilson.
Both DeMarcus Ware and T.J. Ford got to sack Wilson, who completed 4-of-6 passes before leaving the game. Peyton Manning stayed on a bit longer, avoiding getting sacked, and finishing with 10-of-13, throwing for 78 yards. Brock Osweiler completed 6-of-12 passes, throwing a touchdown pass to Jordan Norwood in the fourth quarter that brought the Broncos back from behind to win the game, but he was also intercepted once by A.J. Jefferson.
This was a long game. A weather delay came between two long touchdown drives by the starting offenses: The Broncos had a 14-play, 61 yard drive end with Ronnie Hillman rushing for a touchdown while Christine Michael ran for a touchdown himself after the Seahawks needed nine minutes and 18 seconds to cap off a 14-play, 91 yard drive as a counter to the Broncos.
When you have 25 penalties, it’s going to be kind of messy. That kind of shrouded the game I think from both sides. It does get frustrating, but you’ve got to know it’s the preseason and they’re practicing too. The regular season is when it really counts and I think we would be more upset. But right now we understand they’ve got to work, too. We’ll look at the plays on tape and any questions we have, as normal, we will send to the league. That is an area we’ve got to look at and make sure we’re adjusting. The flags were out tonight, that was clear. The fact we were able to overcome some penalties and still get a touchdown drive, that’s something. I always talk about getting in situations to occur in the preseason that are something you want to be able to overcome in the regular season. You have a penalty, hey it’s bad but let’s try to find a way to overcome it.
