It’s only August, so declaring something as the ‘goal of the season’ might be a bit premature, but there’s no doubt that goals like the ones scored by Fabian Klos of Arminia Bielefeld and Dillon Serna of the Colorado Rapids, both coming with hours separating between them, aren’t something you see every day.
Klos scored the second goal in what would turn out to be a fantastic DFB Pokal (German Cup) win for his team, Arminia Bielefeld. It came in the 57th minute, as the 26-year old striker connected with a corner kick perfectly, meeting it just outside the box with a flawless volley execution, landing in the top corner with the goalkeeper quite helpless to do anything. Bielefeld ended up winning 4-1.
Dillon Serna didn’t get to celebrate in the end of his match. The Colorado Rapids lost 4-2 to DC United, carrying on their poor season in the MLS, ranked only 7th in the Western Conference. Serna’s goal had something to do with the goalkeeper being way out of position, and still, while being chased by four defenders, his ability to get out a shot from close to 30 meters out of goal that was powerful and accurate enough to go in was quite impressive.
Most of the attention yesterday obviously went to the Premier League getting two big matches on its opening weekend – Liverpool beating Southampton and Manchester City overcoming Newcastle. Sometimes, paying attention to the smaller things in life, which means the smaller leagues in global football, presents you with some nice surprises.
