There is more than one side to Cristiano Ronaldo. He is an amazing footballer, maybe the best in the world right now, but sometimes he can’t hold his uglier side inside, resulting in behavior that shouldn’t be seen on a football pitch, like him hitting Diego Godin during the Supercopa match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Some are trying to defend his actions by saying that Ronaldo was simply trying to shrug Godin, not exactly the gentlest of defenders, off of him. However, this was much more than just your ordinary tussle in the middle of the penalty box. Ronaldo’s first motion was to try and shake Godin off of him, but then continued by quickly pummeling the Uruguayan defender twice, and was actually caught by the referee. Only booked, but it wasn’t ignored.

Now it remains to be seen if the Spanish FA does something with it. This wasn’t your ordinary in game foul that can be let go. This isn’t FIFA’s jurisdiction, which means we won’t see anything close to the punishment Luis Suarez got for biting a player, but punching a player is worse, or at least should be viewed as worse. Ronaldo shouldn’t see the pitch for a few matches if everything up the corridors of power in Spanish football is correct and not crooked like many seem to believe.

Ronaldo himself had a bad 45-minute performance as Real Madrid lost to Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the Supercopa. Carlo Ancelotti spoke after the match about how he’s willing to lose in this match if it means not losing in the Champions League final, and obvious dig at his city rivals. Diego Simeone managed to see his team lift the trophy despite being sent off in the first half for an interaction with the assistant referee.
