Despite having quite a few point guard-ish players on the roster and one shooting guard that doesn’t let go of the ball, the Houston Rockets are trying to add another one, possibly initiating a sign-and-trade deal with the Milwaukee Bucks for Ramon Sessions.
Sessions has been renounced by the Bucks, but they have enough cap space to re-sign him and initiate some sort of deal with the Houston Rockets, who might even win themselves a draft pick out of this although that is unlikely.
One thing is clear. James Harden and Patrick Beverley, who are the starting backcourt for this team, won’t be backed up by just Isaiah Canaan, Troy Daniels and Nick Johnson. Johnson and Daniels are both more of the shooting guard type anyway, and since losing Jeremy Lin, the Rockets don’t have a point guard who can attack the paint. Beverley has his advantages, but he’s not one to put the ball on the floor and create things for others.
Sessions started his career in Milwaukee seven years ago and has been moving around since: Minnesota, Cleveland, Lakers, Bobcats (Hornets these days) and then the Bucks again. He isn’t the most efficient of point guards in terms of his shooting. He also isn’t an incredible visionary, but he can score on his own, averaging 12.3 points per game last season and being a double-figure scoring guy for most of his career.
Sessions can put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. The Rockets have been about shooting 3’s, a bit too much, and maybe now that Chandler Parsons is gone too we’ll see some sort of change in their offensive ways, although in the end, it doesn’t really matter who plays point guard on this team, because the ball isn’t coming out of James Harden’s hands.
The Rockets thought they’d get rid of Jeremy Lin, Omer Asik and create themselves a title contender by going after a big name. Turns out they also lot Chandler Parsons in the process, and that playing for Kevin McHale and next to James Harden & Dwight Howard doesn’t sound all that great.
