Match Highlights – Everton vs Chelsea

It’s only August, but Chelsea beating Everton 6-3 just might be the best match we’ll have all season in the English Premier League, with the visitors starting out strong through Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic but letting the home side make it a classic in Goodison Park, especially in the second half as the Toffees kept chasing but never had quite enough to reach the best team in the league right now.

It took Diego Costa less than 40 seconds to get on the score sheet for the third time in three matches since becoming a Chelsea player, and two minutes later it was Branislav Ivanovic, while being offside, that made it 2-0 in what looked like another rampant display from the league leaders. However, once Everton got past the initial shock which included Tim Howard catching the ball outside the box but getting away with it, they were allowed to also take control of the match.

Kevin Mirallas, their best player as Roberto Martinez’ side continues to show an explosive attack but disastrous defending plan, had a powerful header put Everton back in the match right before half time. The feeling in the air was that of more goals, and those feeling the same vibe weren’t wrong.

Everton were the ones dictating the pace but in the 67th minute mayhem began as Eden Hazard did some wonderful work on the wing to create the third goal for Chelsea, an own goal by Seamus Coleman, trying to block the through ball from the Belgian. Two minutes later it was Steven Naismith scoring his third goal of the season making it 3-2, assuring Jose Mourinho nothing is going to be easy.

Chelsea didn’t really get excited, as Nemanja Matic scored the next goal, getting too much freedom on the edge of the box. Samuel Eto’o, formerly of Chelsea, brought Everton back into the match a minute later to make it 4-3, but the Everton defense kept its crumbling ways, allowing Ramires of all people a very easy goal to make it 5-3 after a hectic period of 11 minutes, which broke the spirit of Everton players.

Diego Costa scored his second goal of the match in the 90th minute to cap it as a 6-3 win. He was lucky not to be sent off for his usual dirty tricks and taunting Coleman after the own goal. Jonathan Moss had a pathetic performance which included making the wrong decision at almost every opportunity, which didn’t disrupt the flow of the match luckily, giving Jose Mourinho some scares but not stopping Chelsea from staying on top of the Premier League.
