As always, the list of the 10 most expensive summer signings is mostly filled with Premier League teams making the purchasing, as Manchester United dominate the list with three (Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Angel di Maria), joined by Arsenal (Alexis Sanchez), Everton (Romelu Lukaku) and Manchester City (Eliaquim Mangala), but giants like PSG (David Luiz), Real Madrid (James Rodriguez) and Barcelona (Luis Suarez) weren’t afraid of spending as well.

Bayern Munich’s most expensive signing came only 15th on the summer list: Medhi Benatia of Roma for £22.9 million. To find a Series A club we go down to 19th, with Roma spending just under £20 million to sign Juan Iturbe of Verona.

10th: Romelu Lukaku (From Chelsea to Everton), £31.1 Million

After spending one season on loan with West Brom and another with Everton, scoring a combined 32 goals for the both of them, Lukaku wasn’t about to spend another season waiting for Jose Mourinho to maybe use him up front. Everton relied on him heavily last season and decided to make him their most expensive signing ever, rising to above £30 million thanks to a few add-ons in the deal.

9th: Ander Herrera (From Bilbao to Manchester United), £31.7 Million

Just turned 25 and still without an appearance for the Spanish national team, yet it didn’t stop Manchester United from splashing the cash on the Basque midfielder, who they failed in signing last season. Herrera hasn’t been able to show much since he has arrived at Old Trafford, picking up an injury on his first match, but is planned to be the most important player in the middle of the pitch for the struggling club who spent more than anyone else on new players this summer.

8th: Luke Shaw (From Southampton to Manchester United), £33 Million

Barely 19 and Shaw has been the cause of a transfer battle between Chelsea and Manchester United for over a year. Did Manchester United actually win by signing him for so much? He has the potential to be an England left back for at least the next 10 years, but so far we haven’t seen much from him due to an injury, which is causing Louis van Gaal quite a lot of headaches. He’s still a teenager, but with 60 Premier League matches on his record.

7th: Alexis Sanchez (From Barcelona to Arsenal), £33.3 Million

After three mostly successful season with Barcelona, overall scoring 39 goals (19 last season) in 88 league matches, Sanchez has moved onto a team where he can play a more central role like he does for the Chilean national team. He’s off to a good start with Arsenal, scoring once in the league and once in the Champions League, but it does seem at times like Arsene Wenger isn’t quite sure where to put him on the field.

6th: Diego Costa (From Ateltico Madrid to Chelsea), £33.4 Million

So far, despite the price, he might be the signing of the summer. Costa has went on to score four goals through the first three matches for Chelsea, pretty much picking up where he left off with Atletico, scoring 27 goals in the La Liga for them last season. Despite the late season injury and the disappointing summer, it seems like the Brazilian-Spanish striker feels quite comfortable in a new league and new team.

5th: Eliaquim Mangala (From Porto to Manchester City), £35.2 Million

Still hasn’t played a single match for Manchester City, who didn’t go big this summer in terms of the number of players they signed, instead focusing on just two, both coming from the same club. Mangala, 23, was born in France but grew up in Belgium and has never played for a French side, although he has already been used with the national team. He came to City after playing for Standard Liege and FC Porto.

4th: David Luiz (From Chelsea to PSG), £43.6 Million

Luiz always stands out on the pitch, which is why he might be the most memorable figure of the Brazilian team that got thrashed in the World Cup by Germany and the Netherlands. Jose Mourinho never wanted him in the first place, some might call it an act of genius to sell him for such a price. Money is weighed differently as PSG, who didn’t mind splashing the cash on yet another Brazilian centre back, something of a tradition there since the big money started coming in.

3rd: Angel di Maria (Real Madrid to Manchester United), £66 Million

One of the more shocking transfers this summer considering how well Di Maria has done for Real Madrid and what an integral part of the team he has been since joining in 2010. It’s not quite clear what his position will be with his new club under the changing tactics of LVG, but a lot of hopes are being placed on his shoulders and talent to turn things around.

2nd: James Rodriguez (From Monaco to Real Madrid), £70.4 Million

Sometimes it’s all about timing. Monaco are during a clearance sale, Rodriguez is young, coming off a good season and a brilliant World Cup. Real Madrid love young stars who look good and can sell jerseys, and so we got this astronomical transfer fee for the 23 year old, who is getting criticized for the price and compared to Angel di Maria. Maybe the critics were right, but Gareth Bale needed quite some time before adjusting to playing for the biggest club in the world.

1st: Luis Suarez (From Liverpool to Barcelona), £71.3 Million

It’ll be a while before Luis Suarez makes his official debut for Barcelona because of the bite 3.0. Just when Liverpool thought they had done enough to avoid another summer of will he or won’t he leave came his taste of Chiellin’s shoulder, and the wheels were set in motion for Barcelona to make their biggest signing ever, adding the Uruguayan striker who has scored 61 goals over the last two seasons for Liverpool.
