The Texas A&M Aggies might be setting SEC attendance records, but they’re also getting beaten quite badly by Mississippi teams, losing 35-20 to the Ole Miss Rebels, who didn’t need much from Bo Wallace, avoiding any mistakes, thanks to the best defense in the nation.

For the second straight week, Ole Miss didn’t have to ask too much from Bo Wallace. Texas A&M outgained the Rebels 455 to 338, but it didn’t bring them any closer. They turned the ball over three times, resulting in two defensive touchdowns by Cody Prewitt and Keith Lewis, losing to one of the Mississippi teams for the second straight week, resulting in falling to a 2-2 record in the SEC, with the top teams in the West starting to get away from them.

Bo Wallace completed 13-of-19 passes for one touchdown pass and 178 yards. He also led the team with 50 yards on 14 carries, as the Rebels finished with 160 rushing yards. Their defense, as expected, did the rest of the work. The two passing touchdown by Kenny Hill made it just three this season against the Ole Miss defense, which has nine more interceptions than passing touchdowns against them through the first six games of the season.

Another thing the Rebels defense did extremely well was stop the Aggies rushing game. In five of the first six games this season, Texas A&M had more than 100 yards on designed runs between the tackles, averaging 122.7. Ole Miss held them to just 27 yards on 18 carries between the tackles and limiting Texas A&M to just 54 rushing yards altogether, averaging 1.5 yards per carry. The Aggies were held scoreless in the first half, a first under Kevin Sumlin and the first time for the Aggies since 2010.

A special day in Kyle Field was hampered by Texas A&M simply not being good enough. Kenny Hill blamed himself for the turnovers. More than 110,000 over-filled the still-being-renovated stadium; a record crowd for a football game in the state of Texas and also an SEC record. But Hugh Freeze later said that one of the best things about this day was playing in front of so many fans, and listening to so many people being silent in the end.

Ole Miss aren’t talking about number one, although they have a case. They simply have one less win over a ranked team compared to Mississippi State. The Rebels still have four SEC West games to play: LSU and Arkansas on the road, Auburn and Mississippi State at home. That game against the Bulldogs comes on the final day of the season. Who knows, but maybe for the first time ever, the Battle for the Golden Egg will be the biggest game in College Football for one weekend.
