College Football – Only Four Undefeated Teams Left

Ole Miss Rebels

The number of undefeated teams in College Football falls to four after Florida State beat Notre Dame and West Virginia stunned Baylor. The Seminoles remain one of the four undefeated teams, joined by Marshall, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

The national champions survived their big top 5 clash with the Fighting Irish despite constantly chasing the visitors the entire game. In the fourth quarter they took the lead for the first time in the game with a touchdown run by Karlos Williams. Notre Dame replied with a touchdown, but that was returned and taken back for a pass interference call on one of the receivers. On the next play Everett Golson threw an interception, and the game was over.

With this win, Florida State might have bought their way back to the top spot, especially after the Bulldogs didn’t play this weekend. It’s their second win over a ranked team (Clemson was the other one), and probably the last difficult test they have in front of them excluding what should be another ACC Championship game for them. There is Louisville on the road that is somewhat of a test, but that’s about it. Especially not Florida, who look sad and worse by the minute.

Baylor came into Morgantown as the #4 team in the nation but lost to West Virginia 41-27 despite not turning the ball over once compared to three by the Mountaineers. Bryce Petty completed less than 50% of his passes and penalties took away too many plays from Baylor that cost them heavily in the end. It’s not going to be the loss that stops them from winning the Big 12, which is blown wide open with the results of the last three weeks, but it showed that this Bears team isn’t going to have a smooth route to the title like last year.

Ole Miss kept on showing that they have the best defense in the nation with a 34-3 win over Tennessee. Bo Wallace didn’t find it too difficult to dominate against the Vols, who are 0-3 so far in the SEC and all the excitement over the Butch Jones tenure is quickly turning into disappointment, as Tennessee remain a step or two behind the rest of the conference, and better recruiting on paper hasn’t been able to move them forward.

Last, and actually least, are Marshall. Considering other results, they’ll rise from their #25 when heading into this week, but wins over the likes of Florida International, now a 3-5 conference USA team, isn’t going to help the Thunder Herd when it comes to making the College Football playoffs, even if they do end the season as one of the few undefeated teams. They’re probably not going to even make it into a big bowl game.
